New Delhi, September 24, 2025 – Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space, Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, today inaugurated the Dental Technology Innovation Hub at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) in New Delhi. The facility has received backing from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
In his address, Dr. Singh described the hub as a vital enhancement to the dental field’s toolkit, aligning with the forward-thinking policies championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi across scientific domains. He emphasized that the center will serve as an economical resource for research, diagnostics, and treatment, while advancing the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by minimizing reliance on foreign dental implants and devices.
The Minister highlighted the hub’s inclusive design, which opens doors for innovators, startups, and MSMEs. “This collaborative approach embodies the government’s decade-long commitment to a unified national and governmental effort,” he noted. He recalled a time when dental and medical implants were predominantly imported, expressing pride in India’s current ability to manufacture synthetic and biodegradable materials matching global benchmarks. This progress has transformed India from lagging in specialized treatments to becoming a global medical tourism destination.
Dr. Singh pointed to recent government initiatives, including the National Medical Devices Policy 2023 and the Medical Devices Rules 2017, which are fostering an environment for cutting-edge, affordable healthcare facilities nationwide. He stressed the pillars of “awareness, accessibility, and affordability,” noting progress in the latter two but calling for increased public education efforts.
The Minister also announced plans to expand medical education, adding approximately 1,000 undergraduate and 5,000 postgraduate seats, including those in dental sciences. He commended the involvement of both public and private sectors, underscoring their synergy as crucial for advancement. With rising demand for dental care due to longer life expectancy, he advocated for interdisciplinary methods, linking dental science with fields like endocrinology, cardiology, and diabetes care. He also praised the integration of AI tools and suggested partnerships with engineering and tech institutions to bolster innovation.
Concluding, Dr. Singh envisioned the hub as a cornerstone in preparing dentists for a developed India by 2047. “To ensure a strong foundation for a prosperous nation, facilities like this are essential,” he remarked.
The event saw the presence of Dr. Abhay Karandikar, DST Secretary; Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary DHR & DG-ICMR; Dr. Arundeep Kaur Lamba, MAIDS Director-Principal; and Sh. Dharmendra, Chief Secretary of the Government of NCT of Delhi.
