Visakhapatnam’s GVMC Pioneers Community-Driven Climate Action, Shines as Bloomberg.Org Mayors Challenge 2025 Finalist

Visakhapatnam, October 11, 2025, 2:00 AM IST – The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is redefining urban resilience by collaborating with residents to combat climate change, earning its spot as a finalist in the BloombergDotOrg Mayors Challenge 2025. Embracing a novel co-governance approach through co-creation, GVMC engaged directly with climate-vulnerable fisherfolk communities to develop tailored solutions from the grassroots level.

The initiative began with the use of cartography to identify areas most affected by intense winds and heat stress, uncovering critical environmental hotspots. The real innovation, however, stemmed from integrating this data with the profound local insights of the community. One standout solution—promoted by residents themselves—was the adoption of greening projects, seen as a concrete and visible way to enhance comfort and livability. GVMC supported this effort by preparing sites and supplying saplings, blending traditional knowledge with expert recommendations to ensure sustainability.
