Visakhapatnam is undergoing a remarkable urban makeover, with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) spearheading extensive development and beautification projects. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, IAS, recently announced that these initiatives, while timed for the upcoming 30th CII Partnership Summit, are part of a broader, sustainable vision to elevate the city’s infrastructure and aesthetic appeal for future global events. As of November 12, 2025, approximately 95% of the planned works have been completed, showcasing rapid progress and meticulous planning.
The transformation spans multiple fronts. The GVMC has laid 9.5 km of fresh bitumen roads to improve connectivity and ensure smoother commutes. Additionally, 26 km of footpaths have been repaired and repainted, enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility. Aesthetic upgrades include 57 km of freshly painted medians and curbs, alongside vibrant mural art that adds a cultural touch to the cityscape. Strategic junctions have been revamped, and high-intensity lighting now illuminates key areas, boosting safety and ambiance. Lush greenery has been integrated into urban spaces, reinforcing Visakhapatnam’s commitment to eco-friendly development.
Commissioner Garg emphasized that these efforts align with a long-term urban planning strategy prioritizing sustainability. Key initiatives under “Operation Lungs” include round-the-clock beach sand cleaning to maintain pristine shorelines and stringent measures to prevent sewage discharge into the sea, safeguarding marine ecosystems. Underground cabling is being implemented to declutter the skyline and improve infrastructure resilience, while new vending zones are being developed to organize street commerce and enhance public spaces.

Garg called on citizens and local businesses to play an active role in maintaining cleanliness and supporting GVMC’s mission to position Visakhapatnam as a global benchmark for sustainable urban living. By fostering community participation, the city aims to sustain its transformation beyond the CII Summit, ensuring a cleaner, greener, and more vibrant future.
