October 3, 2025 – A devastating mishap marred Vijayadashami celebrations in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district when a tractor-trolley carrying devotees and Durga idols for immersion plunged into a pond, killing at least 11 people, including eight young girls. The incident occurred in Ardala village under the Pandhana area on Thursday evening, highlighting safety lapses during festive processions.
The tractor-trolley, loaded with around 20-25 passengers from Padlafata village in Rajgarh gram panchayat, was en route to immerse idols when it halted on a narrow culvert near the pond. Eyewitnesses reported the vehicle suddenly lost balance and overturned, plunging into the water amid chaos as panicked relatives searched for loved ones. Rescue teams, including police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and locals, deployed JCB machines and divers to retrieve bodies, with operations extending late into the night. Three survivors are receiving treatment for injuries, while fears persist of a rising toll as searches continue.
Among the deceased are Aarti (18), Urmila (16), Sharmila (15), Kiran (16), Patli (25), Sangeeta (16), Chanda (8), Dinesh (13), Ganesh (20), Revsingh (13), and Ayush (9), as identified by authorities. Khandwa Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai confirmed the details, noting the probe into possible overloading or mechanical failure.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed profound grief, announcing Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to each deceased’s family and directing swift relief measures. “These accidents during Durga immersion are heart-wrenching,” he posted on X, extending condolences. Similar tragedies, including one in Ujjain where another trolley fell into the Chambal River, have raised alarms over unsafe transport during immersions.
The incident underscores the need for stricter safety protocols, like avoiding overloaded vehicles on precarious routes, amid heightened festival fervor. Authorities urge caution as immersions continue nationwide.
