Karaikal, Puducherry, October 5, 2025, 12:55 AM IST – The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) proudly commissioned ICGS Akshar, the second of eight Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), on October 4, 2025, at a ceremony in Karaikal, Puducherry. This 51-metre vessel, crafted entirely within India by Goa Shipyard Limited, reflects the essence of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, boasting over 60% local components as part of the ‘Make in India’ drive, showcasing the nation’s rising maritime prowess.
Weighing approximately 320 tons, ICGS Akshar is powered by dual 3,000 KW diesel engines, achieving a top speed of 27 knots and offering a range of 1,500 nautical miles at a steady pace. The ship features homegrown Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) and gearboxes, enhancing its agility, adaptability, and sea performance. Its armament comprises a 30 mm CRN 91 gun and two 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCG), all linked to advanced fire-control systems. Additionally, it is equipped with an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and Automated Power Management System (APMS), boosting efficiency and automation.
Stationed at Karaikal under the oversight of Commander Coast Guard Region (East) via the Commander, Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 13, ICGS Akshar will patrol maritime boundaries and fulfill the ICG’s diverse responsibilities. The commissioning was officiated by Smt. Dipti Mohil Chawla, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence, alongside Additional Director General Donny Michael, Coast Guard Commander, Eastern Seaboard, and prominent officials from central and state governments.
Named ‘Akshar,’ meaning ‘eternal,’ the vessel embodies the ICG’s unwavering dedication to maintaining secure, safe, and pristine waters, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime defence capabilities.
