DGCA Assesses Airfare Patterns Ahead of Festive Travel Boom

October 5, 2025, 10:02 PM IST – As the festive season approaches, bringing with it a significant uptick in travel demand, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), under the directive of the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), has taken a proactive stance in overseeing airfare trends. The DGCA is entrusted with the critical responsibility of monitoring ticket prices, especially during high-traffic periods like Diwali, Dussehra, and other regional celebrations, and is empowered to introduce necessary measures to curb any unexpected price surges that could burden passengers. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable and accessible air travel for all citizens during these joyous yet busy times.

In a strategic move to address the anticipated rush, the DGCA has actively collaborated with major airlines, urging them to enhance their flight capacities by scheduling additional services. This preemptive action aims to alleviate pressure on existing routes, reduce wait times, and maintain service quality as millions plan their festive journeys. The engagement underscores a collaborative effort to balance commercial interests with public convenience.

In response to the DGCA’s call, airlines have outlined ambitious plans to bolster their operations. IndiGo, a leading carrier, will introduce approximately 730 extra flights across 42 diverse routes, catering to popular domestic and regional destinations. Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express will collectively add around 486 additional flights across 20 key routes, focusing on high-demand corridors. Similarly, SpiceJet is set to deploy about 546 more flights across 38 routes, ensuring broader coverage. These enhancements are strategically timed to align with the festive calendar, promising a smoother travel experience for passengers.

The DGCA will maintain vigilant oversight of airfares and flight availability, conducting regular reviews to ensure compliance with fare regulations and adequate capacity. This ongoing supervision is designed to safeguard passenger interests, prevent exploitative pricing, and promote fair competition among airlines throughout the festive season, which is expected to peak in the coming weeks.
