September 28, 2025 – In a significant development, Delhi Police apprehended Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, a self-proclaimed spiritual leader and director of the Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management-Research in Vasant Kunj, on Sunday morning in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The 52-year-old, originally from Odisha and infamously dubbed the “Delhi Baba,” faces grave charges of sexually harassing at least 17 female students over several years at the institute.
The arrest followed an intense week-long manhunt, during which Saraswati skillfully evaded authorities by changing disguises and avoiding traceable devices. A police raid in Agra, triggered by a crucial tip-off late Saturday, led to his capture in a nondescript lodging. “He thought he could outsmart us by staying off the grid, but we closed in,” said a senior Delhi Police official. Saraswati was presented before a Delhi court on Sunday and remanded for further questioning.
A Scandal Unearthed by Courageous Voices
The case came to light in late July when an anonymous alumnus sent a detailed letter to the institute’s management, exposing Saraswati’s predatory actions. Received on July 31, the letter outlined a disturbing pattern of abuse, including inappropriate advances masked as spiritual mentorship. The Indian Air Force, where several victims were enrolled, escalated the matter with a formal complaint, prompting the institute—affiliated with the Sri Sharada Peetham in Sringeri, Karnataka—to notify police.
On August 25, an FIR was filed at Vasant Kunj police station under sections of the Indian Penal Code for sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation. The victims, aged 20–25, alleged that Saraswati manipulated them into visiting his private quarters under the guise of career advice or “spiritual cleansing.” Accounts include reports of lewd messages, verbal abuse, and physical molestation, with some claims of hidden cameras. One victim stated in the FIR: “He altered my records to isolate me and demanded late-night meetings.” The institute, accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has halted operations, and police have seized a luxury Volvo car with a diplomatic number plate linked to Saraswati.
A Trail of Deception
Saraswati, who posed as a revered sage with connections to the Sharada Peetham, allegedly exploited his authority to prey on vulnerable students. A native of Odisha, he had embedded himself in Delhi’s spiritual and academic circles, blending management education with dubious rituals. Raids uncovered evidence of a lavish lifestyle, starkly at odds with his ascetic persona.
Before his arrest, Saraswati attempted to evade capture by shaving his beard, adopting civilian attire, and moving between Uttar Pradesh towns. “The alumnus’s letter and Air Force’s swift action were pivotal,” said investigators. The probe now includes potential accomplices, with forensic teams examining seized devices for additional evidence.

The arrest highlights the dangers posed by unchecked spiritual figures in educational institutions. The Sri Sharada Institute faces scrutiny, with parents demanding answers from the parent Peetham. Activists have praised the police but urged stronger safeguards. “These predators exploit trust; we need mandatory campus helplines and vetting for such figures,” said a National Commission for Women representative.
