On October 18, 2025, Union Ministers Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman (Finance and Corporate Affairs), Shri Piyush Goyal (Commerce and Industry), and Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw (Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology) held a joint press conference in New Delhi to highlight the transformative impact of the GST Bachat Utsav and the Next-Gen GST Reforms, rolled out on September 22, 2025.

Finance Minister: GST Benefits Reach Consumers

Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized that the Next-Gen GST Reforms, announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, were implemented ahead of Diwali, delivering on promises made from the Red Fort. The reforms include reduced tax rates, simplified processes, consolidation of tax slabs from four to two, and resolution of classification issues. She noted, “These reforms reflect the cooperative efforts of the Central Government and the GST Council to pass maximum benefits to consumers.”

The Finance Ministry has been closely monitoring 54 key products to ensure that the reduced GST rates translate into lower prices for end consumers. “Since September 22, we’ve confirmed that the benefits of the revised tax structure are fully reaching consumers across all monitored items,” Smt. Sitharaman stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to consumer welfare since GST’s inception in 2017.

Commerce Minister: “Double Dhamaka” of Relief and Growth

Shri Piyush Goyal described the reforms as a “Double Dhamaka,” bringing relief and prosperity to every household. He credited the Prime Minister and Finance Minister for making Navratri 2025 memorable with reforms that have energized households, industries, and businesses. “This is the biggest reform since independence, impacting 140 crore Indians with tax relief worth ₹2.5 lakh crore,” he said.

The Minister highlighted that the reforms, combined with income tax relief announced on February 1, 2025, have boosted disposable income and savings. The resulting multiplier effect has spurred investment, business growth, and consumer spending, positioning India as the world’s fastest-growing large economy. Record-breaking auto sales during Navratri, led by brands like Maruti, Mahindra, and Tata, reflect this economic surge. Additionally, slashed taxes on health, insurance, and essential goods have enhanced affordability for citizens.

Electronics and Manufacturing Boom: Shri Vaishnaw

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw showcased the reforms’ impact on India’s electronics sector, which saw a 20–25% sales surge during Navratri, with products like 85-inch televisions selling out and consumers upgrading appliances. “The GST reforms have stabilized the economy, moderated food inflation by 2% over four months, and sustained consumer purchasing power,” he said.

The reforms have fueled double-digit growth in electronics manufacturing, creating over 25 lakh jobs. India has surpassed its neighbor in smartphone exports to the U.S., with a major global company now producing 20% of its output in India. Shri Vaishnaw also announced a milestone in India’s semiconductor journey, with production starting at CG Semi and Kaynes facilities, aligning with the vision of a self-reliant Bharat.

Citing macroeconomic data, Shri Vaishnaw noted that India’s ₹335 lakh crore GDP last year included ₹202 lakh crore from consumption and ₹98 lakh crore from investment. This year, consumption has risen by nearly 10% (₹20 lakh crore), driving further investments and reinforcing economic growth.

A Stronger, More Affordable India

The GST Bachat Utsav underscores the government’s commitment to making essentials more affordable, boosting manufacturing, and fostering job creation. The reforms have strengthened India’s economic fundamentals, driving consumption, investment, and innovation, while positioning the country as a global manufacturing hub.
