Visakhapatnam, October 10, 2025, 2:15 AM IST – In a significant step toward empowering women through health and wellness, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) have rolled out the “Sakhi Suraksha” initiative, a dedicated health protection program for women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Launched under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu and aligned with the Aarogya Andhra Pradesh initiative, the program aims to provide comprehensive health screenings to bolster the well-being of SHG women across Visakhapatnam.

The initiative was inaugurated by District Collector Sri M. N. Harendhira Prasad, IAS, at the AU Convention Center on Beach Road, in the presence of East Constituency MLA Sri Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, MEPMA Mission Director Sri N. Tej Bharat, GVMC UCD Project Director Smt. P. M. Satyavani, State Mission Manager Sri N. N. Srinivas, MEPMA Project Director Smt. N. Sarojini, and Dr. Lourdes Lucy from the District Medical and Health Office. The event marked the opening of three dedicated “Sakhi Suraksha” health screening centers in the city, which will operate until October 26, 2025, offering free medical check-ups to SHG women aged 35 and above.

The program underscores the state’s commitment to prioritizing women’s health, recognizing the pivotal role SHG members play in community development. GVMC and MEPMA have urged all eligible women to take advantage of this opportunity to access vital health services, including screenings for critical conditions, to ensure early detection and treatment. “Sakhi Suraksha” reflects Visakhapatnam’s broader mission to foster a healthier, empowered community, aligning with the state’s goal of comprehensive healthcare access under Aarogya Andhra Pradesh. Women are encouraged to visit the centers and participate in this transformative initiative for their well-being.
