Indian Parliamentary Delegation, Led by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, to Attend 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados

New Delhi, October 5, 2025, 10:15 PM IST – A high-profile Indian parliamentary delegation, headed by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, is set to participate in the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), scheduled from October 5 to 12, 2025, in Bridgetown, Barbados. The delegation comprises Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh, Lok Sabha MP and CPA Executive Committee Member Shri Anurag Sharma, Lok Sabha MP and CWP Steering Committee Member Dr. D. Purandeswari, Lok Sabha MP Dr. K. Sudhakar, Rajya Sabha MP Smt. Rekha Sharma, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, Lok Sabha Secretary General Shri Utpal Kumar Singh, and Rajya Sabha Secretary General Shri P.C. Mody.

The event will also see the presence of 36 Presiding Officers and 16 Secretaries from 24 State and Union Territory Legislatures across India, all members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). Shri Birla will deliver a keynote address at the General Assembly on the theme “The Commonwealth – A Global Partner.” The conference will feature seven workshops on diverse topics, with the Speaker chairing the session on “Harnessing Technology: Boosting Democracy via Digital Innovation and Addressing the Digital Divide.”

The CPA Executive Committee meeting, attended by Shri Anurag Sharma as Treasurer and Shri Bishwajit Daimary, Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly and Indian Region Representative, will also take place. Dr. D. Purandeswari will join the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Steering Committee meeting and serve as a panellist at a CWP session discussing “Effective Approaches and Tactics for Gender-Inclusive Parliaments Across the Commonwealth.” Other delegation members, including State and UT Presiding Officers, will engage in various workshops and the General Assembly.

During the visit, Speaker Birla will conduct bilateral discussions with counterparts from other Commonwealth nations to explore shared interests and parliamentary collaboration. He is also slated to meet Barbados’ leadership and connect with the Indian diaspora, strengthening diplomatic and cultural ties.
