Hyderabad– In a major boost to Telangana’s pharmaceutical sector, global pharma giant Eli Lilly has announced a substantial investment of approximately ₹9,000 crore (around $1 billion) to expand its contract manufacturing operations, with Hyderabad as the central hub. A delegation from Eli Lilly, led by President Mr. Patrick Jonsson and India President Mr. Vince Lo Tucker, along with other senior representatives, met Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri A. Revanth Reddy at the Integrated Command and Control Center to formalize this landmark decision. Industries Minister Sri D. Sridhar Babu was also present during the discussions, underscoring the state’s commitment to fostering industrial growth.
The meeting highlighted Eli Lilly’s strategic plan to scale up its operations in India, leveraging Hyderabad’s established reputation as a pharma powerhouse. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy welcomed the company’s decision, commending their confidence in Telangana’s business-friendly ecosystem. He credited the state’s progressive policies and supportive infrastructure for attracting such global investments, noting that the ArcelorMittal steel plant’s progress exemplifies the “Speed of Doing Business” in the region. The CM assured Eli Lilly of comprehensive assistance, stating, “Our government is fully prepared to provide all necessary support to companies investing here, ensuring a seamless experience.”
A key highlight of the announcement was the signing of an agreement on October 14, 2025, to establish a one-gigawatt Google data center, further cementing Hyderabad’s status as a tech and pharma innovation hub. Eli Lilly’s expansion will create thousands of job opportunities, particularly for skilled professionals such as chemists, analytical scientists, quality control experts, management specialists, and engineers, with recruitment expected to begin soon. The company, with a 150-year legacy of delivering advanced medical solutions globally, focuses on developing drugs for diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and immune-related diseases.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recalled Hyderabad’s pharma journey, tracing its roots to 1965 when Indira Gandhi established IDPL, which spurred the sector’s growth. Today, 40% of India’s bulk drugs are produced in Hyderabad, a fact reinforced by the city’s role in manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines. The state government’s pharma policy and the upcoming ATC Center in Genome Valley, supported by technical collaboration, will further enhance this ecosystem. Industries Minister Sridhar Babu emphasized that this expansion will significantly boost employment and skill development in Telangana, building on Eli Lilly’s existing operations in Gurugram and Bengaluru, including its Global Capability Center launched in Hyderabad in August 2025.
The meeting also saw participation from Industries Department Special Secretary Sanjay Kumar and CM’s Special Secretary Ajit Reddy, reflecting a coordinated effort to drive Telangana’s economic ascent. This investment marks a pivotal moment for Hyderabad, poised to attract global attention as a leading pharma destination under the #TelanganaRising2047 vision.
