New Delhi, September 25, 2025 – In a landmark step toward strengthening India’s indigenous defense capabilities, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) finalized a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on September 25, 2025, for the supply of 97 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The agreement, valued at over ₹62,370 crore (excluding taxes), encompasses 68 single-seater fighter jets and 29 twin-seater variants, along with associated equipment. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2027-28 and will span six years, significantly enhancing the IAF’s operational strength while advancing the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The LCA Mk1A, the most advanced iteration of India’s homegrown fighter aircraft, boasts an impressive indigenous content of over 64%, a notable leap from earlier models. Compared to the previous LCA Mk1A contract signed in January 2021, this batch incorporates an additional 67 indigenously developed components, including cutting-edge systems like the UTTAM Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, the Swayam Raksha Kavach electronic protection suite, and advanced control surface actuators. These enhancements underscore India’s growing technological prowess in aerospace, reducing reliance on foreign imports and fostering self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.
This monumental project engages a robust ecosystem of approximately 105 Indian companies, ranging from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to large private firms, directly involved in producing intricate components. The production phase is projected to generate around 11,750 direct and indirect jobs annually over the six-year delivery period, injecting vitality into the domestic aerospace sector. This aligns with the government’s vision to create a self-reliant defense industry, bolstered by initiatives like the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, under which this procurement falls in the ‘Buy (India-IDDM)’ category, prioritizing indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured equipment.
The LCA Mk1A, designed to meet the IAF’s stringent operational requirements, is a versatile, multi-role fighter aircraft capable of air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions.
