VISAKHAPATNAM: (September 23, 2025) The Indian Navy is preparing to welcome its second cutting-edge Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), named Androth, into active service at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on October 6, 2025. The ceremony will be led by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, signifying the official entry of the second vessel among the planned sixteen ASW-SWC ships into the naval fleet.
Crafted by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. in Kolkata, Androth boasts over 80% indigenous content, embodying the Government of India’s Aatmanirbharta initiative and showcasing the nation’s rising prowess in maritime self-sufficiency. Overseen by the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team in Kolkata, the vessel was officially transferred to the Navy on September 13, 2025.
The name Androth carries deep strategic and cultural weight, inspired by Androth Island in the Lakshadweep chain, reflecting India’s dedication to protecting its expansive maritime frontiers. The new Androth pays tribute to its predecessor, INS Androth (P69), which served admirably for over 27 years before its decommissioning, carrying forward its legacy of excellence.
Equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry, advanced sensor arrays, modern communication tools, and waterjet propulsion, Androth is designed to detect, monitor, and eliminate underwater threats with accuracy. Its versatile features also support maritime surveillance, Search and Rescue missions, and coastal security operations across diverse challenges.
The induction of Androth represents a significant leap in bolting India’s maritime defence framework. Beyond enhancing the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, it reinforces the country’s commitment to independently design, develop, and construct top-tier warships, solidifying its position as a maritime power.
