Women Army Officers Allege Discrimination in Grant of Permanent Commission

Female Short Service Commission (SSC) officers in the Indian Army approached the Supreme Court on Thursday, asserting that they face unequal treatment in securing permanent commissions compared to their male peers, despite their vital contributions in operations such as Galwan, Balakot, and the recent Operation Sindoor. A panel comprising Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan, and N Kotiswar Singh heard the grievances from both active and retired women officers, who argued that the Central government has consistently disregarded court mandates.

The officers, represented by senior advocate V Mohana, highlighted that the government has flouted the Supreme Court’s directives from 2020 and 2021. “The administration has persistently breached the judicial orders of 2020 and 2021, showing bias in the allocation of permanent commissions to women officers,” Mohana informed the bench. The plea underscores a systemic failure to uphold gender equality within the military, despite the officers’ proven valor in high-stakes missions.

Cases regarding Gender equality in allotment of Vacancies were also filed by other Lady Aspirants in various courts of late. The Supreme Court has passed Previously many Judgements keeping in mind the Constitutional Provisions of Equality and Natural Justice.
