The Significance of Maa Katyayani
Maa Katyayani is revered as the Warrior Goddess, embodying courage, righteous anger against evil, and divine justice.
- The Legend: According to Hindu scriptures, the gods, troubled by the tyrannical buffalo demon Mahishasura, combined their energies to create a force capable of defeating him. This collective energy crystallized in the hermitage of Sage Katyayana, who molded it into the powerful and beautiful form of the Goddess, giving her the name Katyayani. It was in this fierce form that she ultimately slew Mahishasura, earning her the title of Mahishasuramardini (Slayer of Mahishasura) and restoring balance to the universe.
- Iconography: Maa Katyayani is typically depicted riding a magnificent lion, symbolizing courage and power. She is shown with four hands:
- Two hands hold a sword and a lotus flower.
- The other two hands are in the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness and protection) and Varada Mudra (gesture of granting boons).
- Blessings and Worship: Devotees worship Maa Katyayani to seek her blessings for:
